Cardiff's docklands were thriving in the late 19th Century but following the decline in the coal industry and the end of the second world war, the whole area fell into disrepair.

But in 1999 the redevelopment began with the construction of the Cardiff Bay Barrage, which transformed an area of tidal mudflats into a huge freshwater lake and led to a period of vast improvement.

The result was Cardiff Bay, a haven for sailing and water sports, home to a wide range of restaurants, bars and shops in Mermaid Quay and impressive visitor attractions such as the Bay Visitor Centre, Wales Millennium Centre, Lightship 2000, the Dr Who Up Close exhibition at the Red Dragon Centre, and the fascinating science activity centre, Techniquest.

The Bay also hosts a number of free festivals and events throughout the year, such as the Caribbean Carnival and the International Food and Drink Festival.
