There are many, many good places to eat in South Wales. The following are just a few of the good ones, and are currently my favourites.

For restaurant information on Cardiff Bay have a look at my Cardiff Bay favourites.
Madeira Restaurante, 2 Guildford Cres, Cardiff. tel. (029)-2066-7705 ( map). This is a restaurant just off Churchill Way in Cardiff. From the outside it looks small, but it seats up to 90. The menu is Portuguese with a huge range. The food is excellent and the staff really try to make an effort. Thoroughly recommended for a meal out in the capital. Try the huge kebabs for something different. About £20 per head. Advised to book ahead, especially Thursday to Saturday.
Diner 77, Pontcanna, Cardiff 77 Pontcanna St., Cardiff,
CF11 9HS. tel. (029)-2034-4628 (
map). Owned by Ian Campbell, a friend of mine, but don't
let that put you off! It's a real cosy, friendly American
diner. A good menu ranging from traditional American burgers
to vegetarian options. An excellent veggie menu. Very popular with local Cardiff people. You get a real feast. About £15 per
head. Advised to book ahead, especially Thursday to
Saturday.

Plas Llanmihangel, Llanmihangel, nr. Cowbridge, CF7
7LQ. tel. (01446)-774610 (
map). Looking for somewhere really different? Then try
this 16th century manor house hidden away in the Vale of
Glamorgan. Sue Beer is renowned for giving private dinner
parties. The meal is served in the banqueting hall.
Groups of 6 or more recommended. A reconnaissance of the
location is worth it especially if you plan to arrive after dark.
Car essential and a taxi to get home even more essential, though a
small number of rooms are available B&B. £35 per
head plus wine (you can bring your own if you talk nicely to
Sue). Book well ahead and be prepared to haggle over
dates. You can look for the ghost of the Lady of the Lake as
you leave as well!
New House Hotel, Thornhill,
Cardiff, CF4 5AU. tel. (029)-2052-0280 (
map). This Cardiff hotel is renowned for the quality of
it's restaurant. Well worth it for the luxury and
pampering! About £30 per head. Advised to book
ahead.
Glanmor's Tearooms, Unit 30 Castle Gate Shopping, Brynau Rd, Caerphilly. tel. (029) 2088 8355 ( map) If you're visiting Caerphilly Castle or shopping in Caerphilly then it's well worth a small detour across the road to this spacious tearoom. The location is perfect with a great view of the Castle. The food is excellent and the staff are perfect. About £6 per head for lunch. Just turn up and grab a table!
